Vapor Barriers

A vapor barrier is a protective layer, usually made of poly sheeting or foil, installed in a crawl space it prevents moisture from entering the crawl space from the ground.

Vapor Barriers​

Vapor Barrier Installation

1. Preparation
  • Clear the crawl space of debris, rocks, and sharp objects that could puncture the barrier.
  • Check for standing water and resolve drainage issues before installation.
  • Inspect for mold or pests and treat if necessary.
2. Choose the Right Vapor Barrier
  • Use a minimum 6-mil thick plastic sheeting (preferably 10-20 mil for durability).
  • Select a reinforced polyethylene barrier for better tear resistance.
3. Cover the Crawl Space Floor
  • Roll out the vapor barrier across the entire crawl space floor.
  • Overlap seams by at least 6 inches and seal with waterproof tape.
  • Extend the barrier 6- 12 inches minimum up the foundation walls.
4. Secure to the Walls and Piers
  • Attach the vapor barrier to the foundation walls using mechanical fasteners and adhesive.
  • Wrap support piers with the vapor barrier and seal tightly with tape.
5. Seal All Gaps and Seams
  • Use seam tape or butyl tape to secure overlapping sheets.
  • Ensure a continuous, airtight seal to prevent moisture penetration.
6. Improve Ventilation (if needed)
  • Consider installing a dehumidifier for added moisture control.
  • If encapsulating, seal all crawl space vents to prevent outside air from entering.
7. Final Inspection
  • Walk through to check for gaps, tears, or unsecured edges.
  • Ensure a tight, well-sealed installation to maximize effectiveness.
